Find online writing jobs using Google Reader

Have you heard of Google Reader?

Google Reader is one of the best ways to keep up with what's going on online.  How many websites do you visit to find new writing jobs?  How many do you forget to check back with on a daily basis?  And how tired are you of trying to find the best writing jobs online before everyone else does?

Well worry no more because Google Reader can help.  And it enables you to get everything together on the one page.  Once you have read my article and taken the steps I'm going to suggest, all you have to do is remember to check your Google Reader account every morning.

So let's see how this works.

Getting started at finding writing jobs

To begin with, you will need an account with Google.  If you already have one you can sign into Reader with that.  If not, it only takes a few moments to get a new account.

Once you are signed in you can start looking for sites to follow the RSS feeds for.  You might already know of some good writing sites that have feeds for the jobs they promote.  If not, Google Reader will help you find some.

All you have to do is click on the 'add a subscription' link at the top left of the page and enter a keyword or two to find some suitable writing job sites to follow.  Try 'writing jobs' for example, or be more specific and request 'blogging jobs' or 'article writers' and see what comes up.  You will get a list of results back, and all you have to do is click on the 'subscribe' button for each one you like.

The smart aspect of Google Reader

Once you have got a few feeds in your list, you'll notice the recommended sources panel on the left hand side starts intelligently giving you some more suggestions.  So if all the feeds you subscribe to are about writing and finding writing jobs, the suggestions should be along the same lines.  This is good news because it saves you some work!  Instead of having to go out and look for them you can find them right here because Google brings them to you.

Now every morning all you have to do is sign into Google Reader, check your feeds and see what jobs are available.  You can find job feeds all over the place - for example Craigslist has one for every city.  And if you subscribe to one and you find you don't like it, it's easy enough to unsubscribe.

Take time to refine your settings

It might take a few days for you to get your Google Reader account set up so you can see just the right kind of online writing jobs you are looking for each day.  But once you have done it you will be amazed at how much time it can save you.  And of course, you stand a better chance of seeing and applying for more suitable writing jobs all the time.

I use Google Reader every day and I wouldn't be without it now.  It's strangely ironic to say that I originally started using it because a client wanted me to review it as part of a book I was writing for them!  Now I use it every day - and I have found several writing jobs I wouldn't have got otherwise.

Try it yourself and see if Google Reader can enhance your own online writing career.
